Bishop LeBlond Taps Drew Shinn as New Football Coach

Janet Wilcox, principal at Bishop LeBlond High School, today introduced Drew Shinn as the school’s new varsity football and track coach. Shinn comes to Bishop LeBlond High School with more than 16 years of Catholic high school teaching experience and more than 21 years football coaching experience.
Shinn currently is a physical education/health and science teacher at St. James Academy in Lenexa, Kan. He also is an assistant football coach and the head track and field coach for the Catholic high school which opened in 2005.
Prior to his tenure at St. James Academy, Shinn taught and coached for 11 years at DeSmet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, Mo. While at DeSmet, Shinn taught physical education and science, and served in the athletic department as an assistant varsity football coach, assistant wrestling coach and track coach. As a football coach, he coached running backs, quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs. For two years he coordinated the offense, helping lead DeSmet to their first District Championship in more than 15 years during the 2000 season when DeSmet advanced to the state quarterfinals in Missouri’s Class 6. (DeSmet also advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2004 and won the Class 6 football state championship in 2005)
In track, Shinn’s expertise is with sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers. During his ten years as track coach at DeSmet, the track and field team won three conference championships. The sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers broke eight school records and DeSmet track and field athletes brought home more than 20 medals from the Missouri Class 6 State Track meet.
Wilcox said she and the search committee were delighted to be able to hire someone with Shinn’s experience and qualifications. “It takes a special commitment to work in Catholic education and we were all impressed with Drew’s passion and long-term dedication to working with student-athletes at St. James Academy, DeSmet Jesuit and Bishop Ward,” she said. “We were impressed with his energy and his experience working in a variety of Catholic schools.
Before teaching and coaching at DeSmet Jesuit High School, Shinn coached running backs and quarterbacks at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., from 1987-1993. During his six years at Benedictine, Mr. Shinn coached two NAIA All-America running backs and one Academic All-America running back.
Prior to his professional time at Benedictine, Mr. Shinn taught PE and health at Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kan. He also assisted in coaching the Cyclone varsity football team to two KCK Championships and served as freshman wrestling coach and an assistant track coach.
Drew Shinn is a native of Kansas City, Mo., and graduated from Archbishop O’Hara High School in 1979 after lettering in four varsity sports. He received an athletic and academic scholarship to attend Benedictine College where he lettered in football for three years. After graduating from Benedictine College, he went on to earn a master’s degree in exercise physiology and athletic management from the University of Kansas.
