NHS CANDIDATE SERVICE HOURS TO THE SCHOOL (15 hours) Name:______________________________ Grade:______________________________ Service Hours Earned: list activities participated in & number of service hours earned. Project #Hours Adult Sponsor Total:__________ BY-LAWS OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY BISHOP LEBLOND MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL Candidate selection to the Bishop LeBlond Chapter of the National Honor Society is conducted under the requirements established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals that supervise the organization. The Bishop LeBlond Chapter of the National Honor Society as described in the National Honor Society Handbook bases membership equally upon the four standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The specific process of membership selection for the Bishop LeBlond Chapter of the National Honor Society is outlined in the following paragraphs: Selection is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply for membership into the Society. Instead, they provide information to be used by the local selection committee to support their candidacy for membership. This is not an election, nor is membership automatically conveyed simply because a student has achieved a specified level of academic performance. Membership is granted only to those students selected by the NHS Council in each school. This honor, recognized throughout the nation, is both the public recognition of accomplishment and the private commitment to continued excellence on the part of the new member. Membership Requirements for Bishop LeBlondScholarship: A candidate for NHS must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.500 over the course of either 4 (Juniors) or 6 (Seniors) semesters in all subjects. Leadership & Character: A candidate must have three character evaluation forms and three leadership evaluation forms completed by past or present teachers, coaches, or sponsors. Three should be from academic teachers, and three should be from co-curricular activities (clubs, teams, school events) sponsored by Bishop LeBlond. In order to be considered for membership, students must score a minimum 25 out of 30 points on the evaluations. Completed forms should be turned directly by the teacher/coach/sponsor to Mrs. Vertin by October 17. Service: A candidate must complete a minimum of 15 service hours, which must be earned in activities directed toward the school. These service hours must be earned during the school year in which a candidate is eligible, as well as during the summer prior to the year of eligibility for NHS. They must all be volunteer (non-paid) hours. Hours earned may not be carried out in the candidate’s home (ex. Cleaning your room) or for the candidate’s own family (ex. Babysitting a little brother). Hours may not be earned for tutoring other students unless they are supervised and assigned by an adult authority. Hours earned may not be used in conjunction with hours earned for another obligation or for another organization. (i.e., to meet the school’s service requirement). All hours must be verified in writing by an adult supervisor to the activity. Verification of hours earned should be handed to the NHS adviser. Additionally, students will complete a candidate information form. Please return this form to Mrs. Vertin as soon as you have it completed or by October 17. If you have any questions regarding the NHS selection process, please contact Mrs. Vertin.
