So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Ephesians 2:19-22 Baptism is a true entry into the holiness of God so we should not settle for a life of mediocrity, marked by minimal ethics and a shallow religious practice. The ways of holiness are many and possible not just for only a few “uncommon heroes” of holiness. Many Christians have been beatified and canonized, among them many people who attained holiness in the most ordinary circumstances of life. Mother Teresa once said, “We can do no great things—only small things with great love.” Will you accept the call to holiness in your own little corner of the world? Will you go about your vocation, whatever it is, motivated by great love? Reflect and pray. Lord, You call us to greatness. You call us to be numbered among Your saints. Help us remember that we do not have to do outstanding feats recognized by others to please You. All we have to do is live out Your call to love wherever we are in life. We just have to be the best we can be. Give us strength to become the people You call us to be. We pray…I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault; in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. And I ask Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, all the angels and saints and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord, our God. Amen Adapted from “Lent and Easter Wisdom from Pope John Paul II” compiled by John V. Kruse. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.The winter sports recognition will be next Tuesday at 6pm in Grace gym. Thank you to all who helped with registration yesterday. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!A reading from the book of Micah. He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 Prayer and fasting must be accompanied by works of justice. There will be no peace on earth while the oppression of peoples, social injustices and existing economic imbalances continue. We need the unanimous conversion of hearts to love. Do you see an injustice happening within our world? Within our country? Within our community? Within our school? What concrete steps can you take to address this injustice, if only in a small way? Open your heart to Jesus to reflect on these questions. Lord, we know that penitential acts are important, but You also call us to work for justice. Stir us, Lord, so that we are not apathetic to the injustices around us. Lead us to a deeper love of all peoples and help us to work for justice so the world might know peace. We pray…I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault; in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. Athletes must have played varsity and maintained a cumulative 3.6 gpa. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!A reading from the Gospel of Luke. Then Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.’ So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living.…So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate.” Luke 15:11-13, 20-24 Mercy takes the form of love. This love is able to reach down to every prodigal son, to every human misery and to every moral misery which is sin. When this happens, the person who is the object of mercy does not feel humiliated, but found again and “restored to value.” The father first expresses to him his joy that he has been “found again” and that he has “returned to life.” This joy indicates a good that has remained intact: even if he is a prodigal, a son does not cease to be truly his father’s son; it also indicates a good that has been found again, which in the case of the prodigal son was his return to the truth about himself. Is there someone in your life who needs you to show mercy to them just as your Father in heaven shows mercy to you? When someone wrongs you today, will you show mercy and forgive even before forgiveness is asked of you? Reflect and pray. Merciful Father, we sometimes turn from You and reject Your love. We think we can make it on our own. If it were not for Your mercy, we would be forever lost. Help us to remember that You are always waiting to welcome us back. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!A reading from the first letter to the Corinthians. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many…If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, 26 Spirituality of communion means we must see the light of Christ shining on the face of the brothers and sisters around us, it means an ability to think of our brothers and sisters as part of the Mystical Body of Christ, just as we are, so that they are a part of us too. Spirituality of communion means the ability to see what is positive in others and prize it as a gift of God, not only a gift to them but to us too. It means making room for others and bearing each other’s burdens. Without this spirituality of communion, the external structures of communion serve little purpose and become without a soul. Is there someone who absolutely irritates you? Reflect on that person a few moments and find at least one good quality that person has. Thank God for the gift of that person in your life. Triune God, we tell ourselves we have our own interests to protect and don’t want to be bothered by someone else’s problems. Teach us that we are all members of one body in Jesus. Our brothers’ and sisters’ problems are our problems too. End our divisions, God, and teach us that we need one another as we journey to eternal union with You. Morning Announcements In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!A reading from the Gospel of Matthew. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:34-40 After contemplating the face of the crucified Lord, how can we not recognize him and serve him in those who are suffering and abandoned? Jesus invites us to stay with him watching and praying and asks us to love him in our brothers and sisters. A Lent intensely lived will bear the fruit of a greater and more universal love. What is your attitude toward those in need? Do you assign blame to them for their state in life or are you more concerned about helping them? Take a few moments to search your heart and speak to Jesus. Lord, You say we will be judged according to how we treat the least among us. The way we treat them is, in fact, the way we treat You for You are in them just as You are in us. By turning our backs on them, we turn our backs on You. Help us, Lord, to have more generous hearts. Let us not put off until tomorrow what we can do to help those in need today. We pray…I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault; in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. Today is the Feastday of St. Peter Damian. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!Two readings from the Gospel of Matthew.Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Matthew 17:1-2 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” They answered, “He deserves death.” Then they spat in his face and struck him; and some slapped him… Matthew 26:65-67 The desire to see Jesus dwells deep in the heart of each man and each woman. God created us because He loves us and so we love Him in return. This is the reason for the unquenchable nostalgia for God that we preserve in our hearts. God’s face was revealed to us in Jesus Christ. If we wish to contemplate the beauty of that Face, we must first create a silence within ourselves. We must allow this desire to see God to emerge from the depths of our hearts. We must shut out the distractions and allurements of the world. Our reward for this effort will be the wonderful experience of meeting Jesus. Look around the room you are presently in until you find a representation of the face of Jesus. What do you see in that face that speaks to you? What is Jesus trying to tell you? For a few seconds gaze at that face and listen to Jesus speaking to you in your heart. Jesus, our Brother, we long to see Your face. We have no better friend than You. Help us to see Your face whenever and wherever we can, especially in the faces of those closest to us and in the faces of the needy. Happy Birthday to Lauren Alkier & Beth Basham. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!We pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of Erica Smith’s grandmother.A reading from the letter to the Romans. I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2 The message of the Cross is not easy to understand in our times. Material well-being and conveniences are offered and sought as priority values. Do not be afraid to swim against the tide! How is God calling you to swim against the tide? Is it by encouraging you to stand up for your Catholic values? Is it by asking you to consume less and to share your blessings? Is it by asking you to make the effort to befriend someone outside of your usual circle of friends, perhaps someone seen as less than popular? Reflect on these questions and ask for God’s strength. Lord, there is a lot in our culture that pushes us away from You. We feel pressure to conform; we want to be liked and have fun. We know the ways of the world are not Your ways. Give us courage, Lord, to do what is right, especially when we must swim against the tide. Congrats to the varsity girls & boys on their wins over Trenton. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.......Amen!A reading from the Gospel of Luke. But I say to you that listen, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat to not withhold your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same…..Love your enemies, do good,…expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High…. Luke 6:27-36 “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” These words demand a radical conversion. The daily experiences of human life show very clearly how much forgiveness and reconciliation are indispensable to our interpersonal relationships. Are you holding onto a grudge or a hurt? In silent prayer ask Jesus to help you forgive and reach out to the person who may have wronged you. If you have harmed another, ask Jesus for the courage to ask that person’s forgiveness. Let this be one small way you bring peace into the world. Lord, You really know how to challenge us! You know we would rather feel sorry for ourselves than to seek peace with another person. The peace of the world is built on the peace of individual relationships. Help us make this a better world by forgiving wrongs committed against us and by seeking forgiveness for wrongs we have committed. We pray…I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault; in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do.
